India Gate to Connaught Place in an evening

New Delhi was planned as a capital, and it shows best at dusk. A walk from the war memorial to the colonnades of Connaught Place.
Lutyens’ Delhi was built in the 1920s and 1930s as the seat of government, with wide avenues, long sightlines and a scale meant to impress. On foot in the evening, with the heat gone and the lights coming on, it is at its most likeable.
India Gate
India Gate was completed in 1931 as a memorial to soldiers of the British Indian Army who died between 1914 and 1921. The names are carved into the arch. Families gather on the lawns around it after sunset, and ice cream carts do brisk trade.

The National War Memorial, opened in 2019, is a few minutes’ walk away and honours those who have died since independence.
Kartavya Path
The avenue running west from India Gate towards Rashtrapati Bhavan was renamed Kartavya Path in 2022. It was redeveloped at the same time, with canals and lawns along its length, and it is a pleasant walk in the evening.

Connaught Place
Connaught Place is a pair of concentric circles of white colonnades from the 1930s, with Rajiv Chowk metro underneath. It is the easiest place in the city for an evening meal, with restaurants at every price, and the Central Park in the middle stays busy until late.

The Blue and Yellow metro lines meet at Rajiv Chowk, so getting home from here is simple.
