Delhi to Rishikesh by train, road or air

Rishikesh is about 240 kilometres from Delhi. Three ways to make the trip, how long each takes, and what you see on the way.
Most people reach Rishikesh from Delhi. The plains run flat for the first few hours, then the road climbs into the Shivalik hills, and Rishikesh sits where the Ganga leaves them.
By train
The fastest trains run from New Delhi to Haridwar in roughly four and a half hours, and Haridwar to Rishikesh is under an hour by road. Some services continue to Yog Nagari Rishikesh station. Book a few days ahead for weekends and holidays, when the morning trains fill up.

By road
Driving takes six to seven hours depending on traffic leaving Delhi. Leave early to clear the city before the rush. Buses run from the Kashmere Gate bus terminal through the day and overnight.
Stop in Haridwar
If you go by train, Haridwar is worth an evening. The aarti at Har Ki Pauri at sunset, with hundreds of lamps floated on the river, is larger and louder than the one in Rishikesh.

By air
Dehradun’s Jolly Grant airport is about 45 minutes’ drive from Rishikesh, and flights from Delhi take under an hour. Counting the trip to the airport and the wait, it is often no faster than the train, but it is the least tiring option.

From July to August the monsoon can close hill roads and delay trains. Leave room in your plans in those months.
